The Pastoral Womens Council (PWC) works in northern Tanzania to promote the social empowerment of Maasai women, with one of its main program areas focusing on land rights for individual women and their communities.
Transformative changes are occurring in the areas where PWC operates as women are increasingly taking on leadership roles in their communities, challenging societal norms, and defending their individual and community rights to land and resources.
As part of a joint program with UCRT that is supported by Maliasili Initiatives, PWC has helped to establish Women’s Rights and Leadership Forums in pastoralist communities across northern Tanzania. In 2013 these forums successfully mobilized communities to actively defend their land rights in the face of a wide range of conflicts and external challenges.
By facilitating learning opportunities, building its networks, supporting with HR and communications and helping to leverage funding, Maliasili Initiatives is supporting PWC as it helps to grow an emerging social movement to strengthen local land rights and empower women.
