Lion Guardians is a conservation organization dedicated to finding and enacting long-term solutions for people and lions to coexist. Since 2007, they have operated in the Amboseli ecosystem in Kenya, where they have been able to dramatically reduce conflicts between people and lions as well as closely monitor the lion population.
This has resulted in a reduction of lion killings in this ecosystem, economic gains for local communities and detailed information on a growing lion population.
Having developed a unique – and successful – community-based approach to lion conservation, Lion Guardians has been faced with the challenge of expanding their work beyond their initial founding site in southern Kenya, to be able to reach more areas across Kenya and Tanzania, and even beyond into other parts of Africa.
Since 2012, Maliasili Initiatives has worked with Lion Guardians to help them effectively scale up their model and impacts. During 2012-2013 we helped Lion Guardians develop a 2013-2017 Strategic Plan, providing a pathway for developing and scaling up their innovative approach to human-wildlife conflict mitigation.
In 2014, we built on this work by focusing on strengthening their communications strategy and supporting their development of a communications platform to support their programs and fundraising efforts. This support has included ongoing coaching and onboarding of a new Communications Manager, facilitating the development of a communications strategy and action plan, and helping them more clearly define their brand.
Lion Guardians is growing and expanding.
